Do you love to play or watch sports? Have you ever been new to a school and just wished for a friend? Or have you ever wished you could be better at something than you are whether it is reading or football? Then you will love this book. I love to watch football, especially Dallas Cowboys, UT, and Texas Tech. The author, Mike Lupica, uses events, tv shows, and even movies that are current right now (like one comment about "Deal or No Deal") that make you feel like you are right there when the story is going on.
Scott has just moved to a new town and really wants a friend. He is spending most of his time with his dog, Casey, out on the field his dad made for him where they practice football and sports, even though Scott thinks he is not very good. He is great with schoolwork so all the kids tease him, and call him "brain". It gets so bad they start bullying him one afternoon while they are waiting for the bus. The bully (Jimmy) dumps out his backpack, and when he sees a picture of Scott and his dog starts teasing him about this too. Suddenly, from out of nowhere someone tells Jimmy to cut it out and leave Scott alone. Scott looks up surprised out of his mind to see it is the best football player and most popular boy in the school, Chris Conlan. Why did he come to his defense? Do they become friends? Chris has a secret problem, can Scott help Chris? Can Chris help Scott with his football skills? Scott already has one football skill that he is terrific with, but will anyone ever find out about it? This is a terrific book for boys and girls and I highly recommend it. There is always someone we can help. And you might be surprised to find out that the person who you think has everything might just need your help in an area!! What did you think?
